Praia do Salgado

Tranquil beach
Salgado beach is a vast beach located between São Martinho do Porto and Nazaré. Usually the sea is fairly rough, and the beach can be quite steep, so it's not the most suitable beach for children. It is rather a beach for people who are looking for a tranquil day at the beach.

São Pedro de Moel

Versatile seaside resort close to Leiria
São Pedro de Moel is a small sea resort, at about 20 kilometers from Leiria. The Portuguese people like to spend time on the beaches of this village. Also boardsurfers like come here and wait in the sea for the best waves to ride. On the sandy beach you can have a nice walk and enjoy the waves that break on the rocks around the village.

Marinhas de Sal de Rio Maior

Salt is still being produced today, using traditional methods, and stored in the same way as 8 centuries ago. The salt pans are wide and deep, and the salt water springs from an ancient well.
The water is very salt, much saltier than seawater. The water is pumped up to fill the shallow stone or cement ponds (marinhas do sal).

Mafra

In Mafra you can visit the Palacio Nacional de Mafra, a beatiful palace and monastry. João V demanded the construction in the 18th century, the profits of gold- and diamond mines in Brazil financed the construction.
This vast complex is among the most sumptuous Baroque buildings in Portugal.

Palácio Nacional de Sintra

This palace is one of the most important Portuguese examples of royal architecture. It is topped by two large twin chimneys built over the kitchen, which have become the symbol of Sintra. It is the best preserved medieval Royal Palace in Portugal. It is part of the Cultural landscape of Sintra, designated World Heritage Site by Unesco.

Caldas da Rainha

Queen Leonor de Bragança, wife of king João I, was travelling one day in 1484, when she saw peasants bathing in very smelly water in the Óbidos area.

Leiria

Stunning city with castle in the valley of the river Lis
On top of a hill, in the centre of Leiria, you can find the remains of the Castelo the Leiria. It was built around 1135, and in the 16th century it was transformed into a renaissance palace. Parts of the castle were renovated in the 20th century.

Tomar

Tomar is located east of Fátima, in the valley of the river Nabão. Already from quite some distance you can see why Tomar is so famous: the templar castle and convent (Castelo dos Templários and the Convento do Cristo) on top of a hill. This is the main monument of the city and one of the most important in Portugal. It is a Unesco World Heritage Site.

Nazaré

Originally Nazaré was a fishing village. Not so very long ago the fishermen used oxes to pull the boats out of the water, helped by men and women standing in the water. Now you can only see this on painted tiles (azulejos) for sale in the many souvenir shops.

Óbidos

Picturesque fortified town continues to fascinate
West of Caldas da Rainha, is the town of Óbidos. Óbidos is a fortified town located on top of a hill, and still encircled by high walls. Once the town was surrounded by sea, so it was of strategic importance, which explains the high location and high walls.
Dom Dinis gave the town of Óbidos to his wife Isabela as a wedding gift. Together they spent their honeymoon in Óbidos. For ages Óbidos was the wedding gift for every new Portuguese queen.

Aljubarrota

Village with rich history
In 1385 the battle of Aljubarrota was fought between the Castilians and Portuguese aristocrats. Lead by João, the Portugese won the battle. This victory became symbol for the Portuguese independence of Spain. Out of gratitude for the victory, João commanded the construction of the monastry of Batalha, dedicated to Santa Maria da Vitória. After they died, João and his wife were buried in the monastry.

Fátima

One of the larges pilgrimage places in the world. Whether you're religious or not, this place is absolutely impressive.

Portuguese kitchen

It will be no surprise that in the coastal areas, so also at the Costa de Prata, fish and shellfish dominate the menu. Don't forget to try some of the many different dishes with fresh grilled fish or seafood.
Ricedishes with seafood or fish are also an excellent choice. Bacalhau, which is salted and dried cod, is eaten in enormous amounts in Portugal. It is said that there are at least 365 different recipes for bacalhau, one for every day of the year.

As the name suggests, this restaurant is located at the marina of São Martinho do Porto. The owners of the restaurant ars a Swiss-Portuguese couple, they offer you a varied menu with very good food. The simple but good Portuguese kitchen is combined with Swiss refinement. This is one of the very few restaurants that changes the menu on a regular basis, with seasonal and regional produce.

Wine and Liqueur

This liqueur made from sour cherries, is a typical drink that is very popular in and around Óbidos. A perfect place to drink it is the bar Ibn Errik Rex at the end of the main street, near the castle. The Ginja they serve is an old family recipe, and is only for sale at that place, in a beautifully designed bottle, perfect as a gift.
